My kenmore washing machine makes a humming noise. You can slam the lid and it will start working. Sometimes it will so all the way to the rinse cycle before it stops and starts humming again. If I catch it will it's making the noise I can slam the lid and it will start working again if I don't catch it I can let it set for a few minutes then go and pull the knob out again and it will either hum or be working. I'm wondering if it could be the hidden lid switch.

Normally the lid switch will be bad and just shut things off, but this does sound like a lid switch problem. Change it out and see if that fixes things. If not, the timing or the wiring to the motor or even the motor itself could be the problem.
