Hi, the agitator seems to be stripped. It spins freely in either dirction when not in use and does not agitate when machin is operational. You can hear it lightly grinding as the inside assembly rotates but the agitator does not.

Hi Ted, The agitator consists of two major parts: the bottom part called "agitator" and the top part called "auger". If the auger moves freely in both directions then the problem is a bad agitator clutch dogs (#5 on the break down diagram). If the agitator does it then the problem is a worn out splines inside the agitator or on the gear case shaft. Most likely the problem with your washer caused by a bad agitator clutch dogs. In order to fix it you have to use the agitator repair kit. - The part number for the agitator repair kit is AP3094520 Gene.
