I have a Maytag Performa washer that makes a gear grinding noise during the wash cycle. It spins and drains fine. I replaced the agitator base and the noise is still there. What might be the problem?

Hi Blue,
I have the same exact problem on my Maytag Performa! One day the noise just started, everything seems to still work - I just haver this horrible noise like a gear is stripped or something. Only makes the noise when agitator is on, you can feel the vibration of the noise via the agitator. I took the agitator off expecting to see damage to the plastic splines - but nothing, they look OK. Did you ever figure out what the problem is?

You both might have a bad pump, just pull off the front panel, remove the belt and check the pump. If pump is ok, turn the trannt pulley in the agitate direction and check if you feal something binding in the tranny. If so, you need a new tranny.
