I was thinking about this some more and felt I should add one more detail in case it is helpful. It is along the lines of something I did mention before which is that the convection oven setting was the selection that most consistently produced the problem of the oven never shutting off / coming back on later. Since that is the case it was that selection that I asked to be used when the repair guy was over on 1/8/2011. Once we were up and running with the new control board he selected convection oven for 300 degrees. During the next few minutes there were times that it sounded like the convection fan turned on and sometimes off. The important point is that when the convection fan would turn on it made a sound resembling wires "bouncing" or "flexing" when they get overloaded. This noise seemed to both confuse and concern the repair guy. He thought it might have been a rattle caused by the sheet metal since the oven was partially pulled away from the wall. He opened the door to the oven (which turns off the convection fan) and then each time he closed it the noise would occur for a second or two while the motor powered back up. This continued for several minutes and occurred no less than 7 or 8 times. He then pulled the control panel back off the oven and checked to see if the wiring harness might be laying on something wrong. He adjusted the wires. Put the control panel back on and then pushed the oven completely against the wall. This time when he opened the door and then closed it the startup of the convection fan was normal and quiet.

This left me wondering if indeed there is some malfunction with the convection motor that shorts something out in the control board would I not now have the same problem with the new control board that I had with the original? I am not sure....but, wanted to share this since at this point I am not certain what else the problem could be.

I appreciate any feedback on this. I expect the repair place will try to get in touch with us today some time. Unfortunately, I am anticipating some list of additional parts they will want to replace...with the control panel being the most likely I guess. Funny thing is the repair guy did not think there was anything wrong with it on Saturday nor did he think we described any symptoms consistent with problems with it.

Confused.....

Thanks

If this company pretended to be the authorized service then nobody else should know this products better. You have to force them to fix it with no any excuses. Any part replaced by them which did not fix the problem should be taken back with no charge to you.

I will be pushing for exactly that Gene. But, to protect myself and be prepared....do you have an idea what other part(s) it may be based on my description of the problem.

Thank you

It is very unusual but it might be a stuck key on the key pad.

Repair guy was out again today. He got on the phone with support describing the issues. He was told to hunt down any issues with neutral wiring. He then noticed 2 singed wires in a coupling/harness. In fact the coupling seemed to be bonded to the sheet metal a bit. He was able to free that and eventually separate the wiring harness. He said he would be back on Thursday to repair them at no charge.

Good find...I only wish he noticed that problem before installing (and exposing) the brand new control board. My concern is that the board might have some damage. Will see on Thursday I guess.

If you don't mind I keep you posted. Thanks for all your help.

Thank you for your feedback and don't worry about the control board. If it has been damaged, they should replace it under the part warranty.

Keep us posted. It sounds very uncommon and it is going to be interesting for all people who might have the same problem.

The repair guy was out again recently and fixed the wiring/coupling. The oven and micro were misbehaving and he determined the new control board had indeed been exposed and now damaged. They will be replacing it without charge. Can't wait to find out if after all this time and effort if it will be fixed. Hope so.

If so, I think the contribution that my experience may bring to this posting is aside from the control board one has to inspect the wiring and couplings for any exposures or damage. In this case especially the neutral/white wire.

Sorry I got a bit lazy/exhausted with the drama of this whole thing and did not post despite an ending to this story several weeks back.

In all we had the repair guy out 5 or 6 times. He replaced the control board, then fixed wiring, then replaced the control board a second time. Since things were still not working, the repair guy in phone consultation with Whirlpool technical support gave up. I escalated with Whirlpool and they committed to help fund a new unit. Since I could not afford some of the options they suggested I ended up buying a new scratch and dent at my local merchant. Got really lucky actually. The parts that were damaged were simple metal and plastic parts that had the same exact dimensions off my old Kitchenaid unit. Just swapped them out. Since I did get away with buying a scratch and dent this solution mostly benefited Whirlpool. According to our deal they gave me 20% towards the new unit which only cost them about $200. I installed the new unit myself quite easily.

The only part of the story that does not end well for me is that I still had to eat the cost of the control board with the repair place. That cost me around $350 and is still sitting as a brand new electronic in my old unit sitting in my garage. Is there any interest in buying that from me? I'm sure the serial number and date of purchase are on one of the 5 or 6 receipts we have on this thing.

Thanks for all your help along the way and let me know if there are any parts (including the brand new control board) that you may be interested in getting from me.

Sorry to hear it. The only good thing is that you able to cook again.

You may want to try on line action site to sell this control board.
