The dryer gets hot, but it takes two cycles to get each load dry. I don't know if it is the heating element or not.

Longer drying times are an indication of clogged or restricted ventilation. If allowed to continue long, the high limit thermostat or the thermal fuse can open; then you'll have no heat.
