It fills water but does not agitate, it will run through all cycles after including rinse, drain and spin ... Open the front panel, when it is in agitate cycle I can see the motor runs and cable turning. Is the problem with the gearcase?

Yes, your diagnosis is likely correct that the transmission is the problem. Make sure the belt tension is correct though and it is not just the belt slipping that is causing the problem.
