My three-year-old Kenmore refrigerator is freezing food in the fresh food section. What is causing this problem?

Check your settings for the refrigerator section to make sure they aren't turned up to high. If they aren't your cold control may be bad.

Is the cold control the same as the thermostat? How do I check if it is bad?

Hi Gene,

I am having the same problem with my whirlpool refrigerator. Does not matter how I adjust the control knobs, the freezer and fresh food compartment are too cold. I had to throw some food away because they were frozen and became bad.

I checked the part number for my frig is : 2198202 from whirlpool.

How do I check if it is the cold control problem and how do I replace it if it is bad?

I will order the part from your website if I know for sure it is the problem and how to fix it.

Thanks
Gene

Hi Vince,

What is the complete model number of the refrigerator? What is the temperature in both compartments?

Hi Gene,

The model is: GD2LHGXKQ00, made by whirlpool.

Yesterday, I bought a thermometer, and measured the temps in both freezer and fresh food section, they are -15.5 F and 28 F. I tried different settings, but did not work. The compressor seems working all the time, except when it goes to defrost cycle for about 25 minutes.

I tried to turn it off, when turn the knob to zero, it does not shut off the compressor, I have to tab the box or turn the know or take the knob out to make it stop. Once stopped, and if I turn it on, I have to tab on the box few time and it will start.

This is to answer suggestion from Vito, when I turned the knobs to different settings, I can notice the difference of cold air blown out from the freezer to the fresh food section (top left ).

Thanks
Gene

Hi Vince,

The problem is a bad thermostat (aka cold control), no doubt about it.

- The part number for the thermostat is AP3037004

You can find the complete instructions with a pictures in one of our previous posts: http://forum.appliancepartspros...control-box-removal.html

Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool refrigerator Model GD2LHGXKQ00
