Freezer / reefer quit working. Unplugged for a couple of hours. Plugged back in unit got cold for a couple of days then quit getting cold again. Compressor is running, condensor fan running, coils clean, temperature controls work, have output from circuit card. Although unit is not getting cold it cycles through defrost mode after being plugged in for a few hours ( determined by output on circuit card defrost terminal)

Any suggestions?

Which coils - condenser or evaporator?

If you meant the evaporator coils then there is a problem with the sealed system.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for FRG FRS23H5ASB7 | AppliancePartsPros.com

thanks for your reply

Condensor ..... haven't got into the evaporator side yet.... what do you consider as clean on evaporator coil ... free of ice? Should I open up back of freezer compartment to look at it? After being unplugged for a couple of days I would think it was free of ice. Don't understand why it goes into defrost when freezer not cold. Does it do this even though it's not cold? Thinking system may have lost charge, there is a green tarnish on areas of tubing from compressor. Indication of a leak?

thanks for your reply

Yes.

Yes, but the refrigerator should be "on" for at least 2 days.

It does it by the time.

Probably not if there is no oil.

Check the evaporator and post the results.

Thanks for your replies / suggestions Gene. I'll plug the darn thing back in and see what the evaporator coil looks like in a couple of days.

What controls the evap fan? Freezer control and thermostat? Thinking out loud, if evap coil is frosted fan should blow cold air into freezer, correct.

Normally the evaporator coil should be about 100% covered with thin snow. The fan blows cold air into the fresh food compartment and spreads cold air through the freezer. It controls by the temperature control and should stay "on" while the compressor is "on".

Pull off the back panel and check if condensing fan is working and compressor is running.

If you are sure the compressor is running, you have serious compressor problems if it is not compressing the refigerant.
