Refrigerator and freezer stopped cooling. Compressor sounds like it is running and it very very hot! Fan is blowing. The coils were dirty, but not terrible. Any idea what I could check before calling a repairman and looking for a new one?
Thanks!

Here are your parts
Parts for Whirlpool ED5VHGXMQ00 Refrigerator - AppliancePartsPros.com

The compressor is probably hot because it is running all the time.

Are the louvers on the rear cover and front kick plate clean?

I am assuming that the fan you refer to is the condenser/compressor fan.

Is the evaporator/freezer fan running?

If the evaporator fan is not running it may be your problem.

If the fan is running then remove the cover in the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils.

If they are clogged solid with ice/frost then it is a defrost problem.

If there is no frost or frost only in one area (usually where the freon enters the coils) then it is a sealed system problem. This will be an expensive repair as you need a pro and often it makes more sense to put the dollars towards a new unit.

Be sure to do the above check after the compressor has run for at least an hour. If you do it shortly after or during a defrost cycle then you will come to the wrong conclusion.

also you should be able to feel the compressor vibrating to confirm that it is running.

Thank you for the advice Sir! Turned out one of my son's friends does this for a living and you were right on. It was the Defrost Limiter. He replaced it and it is cooling fine. I really appreciate your advice!

You are welcome.

Glad to hear you are up and running.

And thanks for getting back to us. Now when others search for a similar problem they will see what actually worked instead of just suggestions about what could be the cause.

I am attaching a picture of the part so that others can see what it looks like. Again, the symptoms:

Refrigerator warm
Freezer cool but still had some ice
compressor very hot
inside freezer the back was covered with ice. My wife said when he took off the cover it was totally frozen.
