The dryer runs and heats but makes a thumping sound when the barrel of the dryer turns.

As you probably noticed if you reviewed posting on this Forum (and others) noises are hard for us to diagnose because we are not there to listen to them.
From your description, it seems like the rollers are the likely source of the problem. Try to listen to the location of the thumping, and if it is in the back replace the rollers (not an expensive part) and see if that does not solve the problem.
