I have a Maytag washer where the agitator will not stay down. During a wash cycle the agitator pops up and then does not agitate. What part do I need to repair this?

First make sure the setscrew in the bottom of the agitator has not come loose. But the clip that holds the shaft in the transmission is most likely broken #16 on your transmission parts breakdown. It’s just a white plastic half moon clip. You will have to have a tool to take the spin basket out without damaging it. This page will explain how to do this since you are not replacing the tub seal you will not have to follow all the steps. Just go until you can see the clip. Maytag Tub Seal Replacement One thing I will warn is that when the transmission shaft lifts up as you describe water may have entered the transmission. If you suspect this may have happen you will need to drain the transmission and fill it with new oil. The part number for the oil is 056080.
