You have a starter/overload relay at the compressor which could be at fault.Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Test the Compressor Relay - ACME HOW TO.com

Thank You. The overload relay is burnt. Is there a reason this might have happened that needs to be addressed or can I simply replace?? Also, any suggestions of stores I might be able to buy a new one at other than ordering online?
The help is much appreciated.

Most don't go bad but it's still very common for the starter to go out at the age of yours. If anything is causing it, it would be the compressor, so replacing the starter is the only thing you can do yourself.

Appliance Parts Stores should have the part and some appliance repair shops may sell it to you.

In your experience, how often is a bad compressor at fault for a burnt starter? I am asking because I have been told it would make sense to get a new fridge and not having experience myself, question this.

Replace the starter. It's cheap and easy to replace. If that doesn't fix it then buy a new fridge.
