I have a whirlpool ed2chq 22 Cu Ft side by side refrigerator that was manufactured 10/01. It stopped cooling all at once. No signs leading up to failure. Looking closer the compressor was very warm but the cooling fins where cool. If I unplugged the unit and put an additional fan on the compressor... to speed cooling. I could hear the small plastic box that has the electrical connections for the compressor (on the compressor) click (I'm guessing a small bi-metal heat switch) When the fridge is plugged back in the compressor comes back on for 5 seconds then the switch clicks off again. What do you think I could be looking at for a problem? I'm assuming bad compressor. Is this big $$$? If so would it be worth fixing or is the unit destine for the junk yard?

If Your compressor starts, then the overload cuts out, your compressor is drawing excessive current. You can verify with an amprobe. If there are no burnt wires to the compressor, you most probably have a bad compressor. You could pull the start device that's inside the compressor side cover and replace it if it rattles when shaken.
