The belt recntly broke on my dryer. After installing the new belt the dryer ran through several loads. We did not use it for a few days and then running after running several more loads, it was running the lights dimmed for a moment and then it stopped. We smelled electical burning but there was no fire and the breakers did not trip. Upon pushing the start button the dryer will hum but nothing else. With the door switch closed and the drum given a little help by hand to start the unit will run as long as you continue to hold the sart switch down. As soon as you let go the dryer stops.

Thanks,

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for MAYTAG LDE4914ACL DRYER- ELE | AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is a manual which may be helpful.
16008714 1994-1997 Maytag Dryers Service Manual - ApplianceDigest.com
You have to join the site to download the manual but it is free and this is a very good site for manuals and other info for the appliance repair DIYer.

Sounds like a motor problem.
The motor has 2 centrifugal switches on it.
They are activated when the motor gets close to operating speed,
One is for the heating element to ensure the element does not come on before there is air flow.

The other one is probably your problem. When it is activated it removes the start winding from the circuit. It also provides an alternate circuit path to the run winding so that you can release the start switch and the unit will stay running.
So I would say either the switch is toast or a wire going to the switch has burned up as it sounds like you are not getting the alternate circuit path and also the start winding is not in circuit when the motor is at rest so it just sits there and hums.

If it is not a bad wire then you will need a new motor.
