Most likely your refrig. has lost most of it freon. The only other possibility is a restricted system and that's really bad too.

Sorry its not better news.

ok thank you, so I should look for a replacement ? The repair would be more expensive than what the fridge is worth?

Also I am putting some pressure on whirlpool customer service.... what should I be getting from them knowing it has 3.5 years old and it is the second time I have problem with this fridge. For now they are willing to cover 50% of the needed parts but no labor and nothing for the initial diagnostic. Obviously this is not enough...

The problem is the leaking freon. Its probably leaking from the evaporator coils. So they need to be replaced and that requires a sealed system repair and a new filter/dryer. Its not cheap. I'd estimate 4 to 5 hours to do it, plus freon, plus you don't know if the compressor is still OK.

I'd ask for $400 off a new one or that they pay for all parts if you repair.

Personally I wouldn't repair it. Too many bad possibilities.

Thanks again thatguy, we finally had a settlement this afternoon and they will cover all parts and labor, I need to pay for the initial diagnostic (112$ plus tx ).

I am happy with it, all those phone calls were not made in vain...

i spoke over the phone with the tech who is coming for diagnostic tomorrow and he thinks that freon has been leaking somewhere as well. I'll keep you posted.

What else should I be asking him to look at? I will ask him to look at the compressor since it's constantly running for the last 3 weeks.
Thanks again!

I have the same model except it's the kenmore version. I had to clean out the duckbill grommett drain also because of ice in the bottom. Now my icemaker doesn't work and it's only 4 years old. Sears wont pay for anything after one year. Did you get one of those extended warranties?

No I was out of warranty (3.5 years old and one year warranty), I had to call a few times and argue with them and they finally accept to cover parts and labor. I had to pay for the diagnosis ( 112$ plus tx).

So now everything is running fine. The tech replaced the electronic panel device and the compressor dryer/filter as well. It was hard for him to diagnose this issue, the frost pattern seemed normal to him with this specific model. He thought that both defrost and compressor were running at the same time which would explain why the compressor was constantly running and that there was so much heat coming out by the condenser fan. The new electronic board fixed it.

There was no leak in the system since the entire evaporator had frost on it while the freezer was running. He obviously did a pressure test to confirm it.

He tested the compressor by inserting a valve in the sealed system to determine if it was pressurizing as it should which it failed.

3 hours later the freezer had turn water into ice and it does make regular cycles of pressurizing and defrosting.

I hope this will help other members diagnose a similar problem they could encounter...

Thanks again everyone

I'm glad you have a working refrigerator.

You do know that to replace the filter dryer, he had to remove any/all the freon out of the sealed system? Then he refilled the system with freon by weight and yes it would have an even pattern of frost after that. Because its now full of freon.

Maybe the welds on the filter dryer or around the compressor were the problem, maybe not. Only time will tell.

I only have 26 years of experience with sealed systems, so I don't know everything.

yes he put 4.25 ounces of freon in the system.

He first removed the back panel while the freezer was working and it had an even frost pattern which was very surprising. There was not a big amount of ice in the upper right part of the thins like it is shown in the previous pictures because I had it melted a couple days before.

He was very confused when he saw the full frost pattern but when I told him there was a huge amount of heat coming out of the constantly running condenser fan, he suspected that both the defrost and the compressor were running at the same time, which lead him to change the electronic panel.

He told me that as long as there is a complete frost pattern, the freezer will get cold even if there is a block of ice in a corner... Is that true, time will tell... Or maybe it wont create an block of ice anymore because the freezer will do its cycles as it should..

Then he tested how the compressor pressurized and it was showing irregularities, so he changed it.
