I have an Amana ARS9169AS. The freezer has suddenly stopped keeping things frozen. It does keep things about fridge temp (just won't freeze), and the fridge side seems to be about right but barely cold enough.
First I cleaned all the coils. They were SO dirty that I thought it was not getting any air and could have been the culprit. Waited a day and no change. The compressor runs as it should, the compressor fan runs, and the evaporator fan runs. The defrost thermostat tested good, but only the top evaporator coil had any frost on it.
With this info I am assuming I have a refrigeration issue? I don't know much about appliances (but I am learning), and I don't want to replace the fridge if I have missed something. Any ideas???

Yes, unfortunately it does sound like a sealed system problem. As a double check, you could manually defrost the evaporator/freezer coils. Then put the evaporator cove back on anfd let it run for a while. If you still only see frost on the top of the evaporator coils then it is a sealed system problem. Note be sure that the compressor runs when checking this. if you check it during or shortly after a defrost cycle then you may come to the wrong conclusion. I am assuming that the compressor runs all the time except whrn the unit goes into defrost. Mine looks just like example picture one with frost going part way down the top coil and nothing else.
Could it be stuck in defrost mode? I am not sure how to check this, but I thought if that was the case it would feel more like an oven in there. It is about refrigerator warm in the freezer, but not 'hot' to the touch.
Assuming a sealed system problem, I assume I cannot check and/or charge this on my own. I had one place tell me they could come out and check and recharge it and have me going again for about $100. However, I wonder if the problem would just surface again a few months later after things leaked out again (assuming a leak since the compressor runs and sounds normal). They also charge like $40 or $50 to come out for a diagnostic, whether or not they can fix it. Is this something I should take the chance on, or should I just put that money toward a replacement?

The compressor and fans do not run during defrost.
Also if you touch the defrost heater it would be hot.
There is no use just adding freon as it will just leak out again.
They have to find and repair the leak. If they can find it sometimes it cannot be found. The symptoms can also be caused by other sealed system problems.
In most cases it makes more sense to bite the bullet and buy a new fridge. |

I did some more checking and I noticed a dent in one of the lines off the compressor. The line is only about 6 inches long and dead-ends, so I am not sure this would matter, but could a dent in the line cause this issue? The tube is crimped as your picture shows to seal it (temporarily), the refrigerant charging equipment is removed, then the end of the tube is soldered shut for a permanent seal. It looks normal.

Whether fixable or not this type of repair is over my head. I replaced it with a new (to me) used fridge. I am now finding out that the unit I put in has VERY slow ice production (like 10-20 cubes/day), but I guess that is a question for a different post.

Check your freezer temperature.
It should be 0 to 5 degrees F.
Ice production is dependent on the freezer temperature. |
