My dryer stopped heating a few weeks ago and I've been trying to troubleshoot this myself. I've checked the thermal fuse, thermostat, thermistor, and heating element and all are working fine. My 240 volt outlet reads 120 on L1 to neutral and 120v on L2 to neutral but nothing between L1 and L2. I replaced the 30A breaker at the main panel and I am getting 240v there. Also when I test the connections at the terminal block on the back of the dryer I get 120v on L1 to ground and 120v on L2 to ground but nothing when testing L1 to L2. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Hi.
It sounds like you may have a wrong wiring at the wall outlet. You are getting the same leg at L1 and L2. IF you couldn't find anything obviously wrong - consider calling a professional electrician.
Simon.

Hi Simon,
Thanks for your quick response. I replaced the outlet using the same wiring diagram that was there before. Shouldn't I be getting 120v from each leg and 240v across both? It's a simple three wire outlet. 120 from each side but not 240 across...

Just like I said it's the same leg.

The same leg? Does that mean there is probably a shorted out wire somewhere along the way from the breaker box to the outlet?

If the breakers are single they may be on the same leg. I'm not an electrician, sorry, can't provide a professional assistance. Keep me posted when you'll find the answer.
Good luck.
Simon.
