While replacing the bolt/washer that holds the agitator down on my older Kenmore top load, I cannot tighten it due to the shaft underneath turning with it. What am I suppose to do to tighten it all of the way?

Make sure the agitator is down all the way and hold it while tighening the bolt. If it still will not tighten, you have a stripped spine on the tranny shaft.

I took the agitator off again and inspected the spines and, althought alittle worn, there are none broken. The inside of the agitator where the shaft fits up into does appear to be worn flat though. If that's the case, would replacing the agitator fix the problem and what should I expect to pay?
