When i turn the dryer on you can see the flame come on and start to feel the heat then it goes off

First thing to do is check for clogged vent.

I had the vent to outside off while I was running the dryer

Having the outside vent off doesn't mean the internal ductwork isn't clogged. There is usually a duct that runs from the top back wall of the dryer to the bottom opening where the external venting attaches.

i took thecover off the vent cleaned it throughly. started the dryer up flame came onthenshut off again. still the same problem
