Hi Experts! Hopefully you can help me with this problem: I have a Whirlpool dryer, which is blowing air, but not producing any heat. I took the back off and saw two things that concern me: 1. Soot - I assume from electrical fire or something? The black thing looks OK though, doesn't look like it has any damage - or it was replaced. 2. only one wire is running to the heating coil. Shouldn't there be two wires? I could not find another loose wire anywhere. Do you guys have suggestions on how to bring the heat back to the dryer? Thermal fuse is OK, I checked for that. Thank you! frombyu attached the following image(s):

Locate the other wire that is supposed to connected to the element. It either burned off or was bit of or something....... without that wire though you are only going to be air drying... Nat

I was trying to find that wire for a while, bu there is no sign of it anywhere. Is there a diagram I could refer to, or at least get a color, or approximate location of the source? There are no snapped, cut, or burned loose wires in that area. The red wire runs from the bottom panel.

There's a red wire with a white stripe that is missing from your picture. And the wiring is not correct, which is probably where the elecrrical fire came from. I'd say someone has worked on this that wasn't sure what they were doing. Nat

Hi Nat, Thank you for helping me. Here is the diagram, and I think i correctly circled the part in question (coil and thermostat). Why do you think that the missing wire is red with white stripe? That is the only wire that is not color-labeled in that diagram! And what is the NC code? Thank you, Dennis frombyu attached the following image(s):

Theres a jumper wire that's not in the picture (because incorrect parts were installed)it's red w/white stripe. Part number AP3094244 is what is supposed to be there and it has a the jumper wire that's missing from the picture. Sorry I didn't clarify that earlier. nat

Frombyu there nothing wrong with the wiring I check the diagram the two heavy red wires carry your 240v to the element the burn,t area may be from the element, shorted to the metal box.Look inside or remove the element and check for any breaks.then start from the first. check you fuses/breakers to make sure there not open.If good, check the operating theremstat to make sure the stat is not open. then check the hi limit thermostat[the one on the can at the bottom] to make sure that not open.....post your findings....

Hi Abbie: I did a quick check this morning with a battery and a lamp - every fuse ,breaker, and thermostat pass. I will take out the heating element and inspect it closer in the evening. Abbie, the heating element has only 1 wire connected (the solid Red). There has got to be two, and you say 'the two heavy red wires carry your 240v to the element the burn', I only can see one connected in the first image ( PICT0007_post.jpg ), what color is the other wire, and where is it coming from?

Hi Nat, Ah. Ok - I think it is starting finally make sense. The dryer wasn't heating ever since the wrong part was installed / replaced - because there is no way it could. Seems like the thermostat does have the 3/16" terminal, so I'll need to do the cutting off/crimping the wire, just like it is outlined in the instructions. After I do that, do I install the jumper wire on the thermostat terminal on the left (where red with white stripe) or right (white with balack stripe)? The part manual shows the connector on the thermostat that is closest to the coil connector (that would be left) - is the thermostat wired in correctly? What does "To Harness" mean?
