My 6 year old whirlpool dryer will not start when a cycle is selected and I press the start button. I only hear a humming noise. This just happened suddenly without any warning.
I've checked the power cord, no problems with circuit breaker. I'm hoping this is an easy fix before I make a call for for the repairman.

Here are your parts Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL LEQ8000JQ3 29``ELECTRIC DRYER | AppliancePartsPros.comI am assuming the hum is coming from inside the dryer. Do you get air flow and heat? Does it continue to hum after you release the start button? If yes to both the above, then you may just have a broken belt and you are hearing the motor. If no to the above then the motor cannot rotate the drum. Try turning the drum in the correct direction to check if it is jammed or has another problem. It should turn fairly easily. If OK This may take two people. With the door open push/activate the door switch. Then push the start switch. Rotate the drum in the correct direction. Watch your knuckles in case it starts up. If it does and the drum does not have excessive drag then odds are that the motor is toast. |

It continues to hum when after I press the start button but the drum's not rotating. I didn't check the belt though.

OK This unit uses a push to start relay so perhaps you are hearing relay buzz.
It could be the thermal fuse (Item 7 in Section 3). I could not find a wiring diagram for this specific unit but on most of them the fuse is wired between the motor and the start relay contacts.
Unplug the unit and check the fuse with a meter should be 0 ohms.
Jiggery Pokery method is. Unplug the unit. Remove both wires from the fuse, short them together and tape them up so they will not short to the frame. Plug the unit in and give it a try.
If blown, replace the fuse ASAP as it is a critical safety device re: prevents lint fires which can turn into house fires.
Also clean/check your vent system and the blower as these are the most common causes of it blowing. |

Before checking all the thermal fuses etc. try this. Open the door, hold down the on/off door switch then push the start switch on the control pannel. On mine a chunk of the tab that the door depresses had broken off and so the door failed to activate it. Fixed it by epoxying on a piece of popsicle stick to lengthen the tab. Pretty proud of myself actually!
