My GE washer won't agitate. It spins and drains and the belt is okay. Can anyone tell me how to take the agitator off so I can check the agitator coupling? The cap comes off but there isn't a bolt under it. How does the next part come off?

i usually pull it straight up+off using my hands under agitator bottom lip, but iam fairly strong, there is a tool called an agitamer which inflates with water under pressure that you slide under agitator, it is not cheap. a pair of strong hands should work , good luck

Thank you misterfixall, my husband was able to pull off the agitator and replace the agitator coupling. The agitator does seems a little slow or maybe it's finally working right. Anyway thanks so much for your help.

Sometimes these agitators really get stuck. In this case, a rope wrapped under the agitator and a 2x4 is used to pry it off, no need to buy the agitamer.

The agitator coupling was worn, so it was replaced but now the washer is agitating very slow. Is there something else I could have missed? Thanks richappy, the agitator came off with a good pull.

Is the agitator moving at the right speed in fast mode?

The setting is on normal/fast, but it runs like it's set on gentle/slow.

You might have a shorted speed control switch allowing current in both low and high speed windings. Measuring excessive motor current to the common motor wire would confirm this.

Checking the wires and currents sounds a little more complicated so I have a repair guy coming out tomorrow. Thanks again richappy for all your help.
