frost buildup on coil in freezer. don't see a timer, The defrost element is a little blackened. What components control the defrost ? What voltage is at the heating element in normal defrost operation. What is best way to check defrost system?

I am assuming your model number starts with GSS rather than DSS correct? If so the most common thing with will cause this is the defrost element. You can check it with an ohmmeter and if it is open replace it. If not the thermistor near the top of the coils and the main board could be your problem. Refrigerator repair guide

Unplug fridg, remove the cover from the motherboard in the back and locate the three pin power connector. Remove connector, notice which pins are labled defr, and line on the pc board. Place a jumper into the mating pins on the connector. Fridg should defrost, if not, you have a bad defrost heater, if defrost, you have a bad motherboard.
