The spin cycle didn"t work but there was a loud noise and something spinning
could be heard. What could it be on this old machine(20 some years)?
How can I get to it?

There's only a small panel in the back lower left about 151/2"x151/2".
I took it off and only saw the motor, tub and some electrical components
but no pulley. The washer did go through some of the wash cycle if not all
but it would not spin in the rinse cycle.

Sorry,I looked again and saw a very obvious large pulley on the right
and a small pulley on the left. The belt seems to be in good condition
and it can be turned easily by hand. The pullies have no wobble.

Lift up the outer spin solenoid plunger and turn the belt. The slide should move to engage the clutch and the basket should start spinning. Post results.

Richappy,

What does the outer spin solenoid look like and where is it?

You have a dual solenoid mounted to the transmission. Just lift up the plunger on the solenoid on the left side next to the side wall. Then pull the belt clockwise till it goes into spin.

richappy,

The diagram for this model doesn't show a transmission. Only a motor and
pump assembly are attached to the pulley. I'm still confused on this.

I looked at the thread by debjames and looked up the Model#. The parts
look closer to what I see than for the model # on my machine. It could be some of the parts could have been changed by the repairman we bought it from over 20 years ago.

I see two cam bars and two plungers. I tried lifting them both one at a time,
while turning the belt from right to left until one or the other would stay up.
The result is that I believe the inner most plunger (further away from the
panel door) controls the spin. So I turned the belt while holding that plunger up until the belt tightened and could no longer be turned. The plunger would then stay up. I turned on the machine to approximately the spin cycle and it started to spin for a few turns then stopped spinning but the
belt was still turning.
I repeated this with the plunger toward the door. It took a number of turns before this plunger would stay up but the belt did not tighten as with the
other plunger. It very weakly agitated but then stopped and the belt was
still turning.
Is this repairable or am I looking at another washer? If so, any recommendations on washers (new or used)?
I forgot to mention that I did these tests with the water turned off. Does this make a difference?

If the motor is turning in spin, you either have a broken wire at the solenoid, a bad solenoid, or a bad timer.
