I was washing clothes when i smelled the belt smoking. i found out the drum was not moving but water was draining which was causing the belt to smoke. it also doesn't agitate the motor runs fine but even if you aply pressure to tighten belt it wont turn. the piece on the bottom of drum ( not sure if brake or clutch) turns clockwise by hand freely but wont turn counter clockwise. is this a belt, tranny or what please help my laundry is piling up

I am afraid that your symptoms point to a transmission failure, in which case a replacement machine may be the better solution.

Here is a service manual if you want to look at the process.
