Is the old start device the same as this sites AP4000197, and you had a thin overload plugged in the top pin? If so, and you failed to note where the wires connected to it, then you have real problems. If you wire it up wrong, you would probably blow out your compressor.
If the new device has three compressor pins, and just plugs in the compressor, you will be ok, impossible to burn out the compressor.
