12 year old Hotpoint side x side model.

Both sides are not cooling. The compressor was hot to the touch - checked the coils and they were filthy. Cleaned the coils and then let the compressor cool before plugging it back in.

Clicking sound coming from compressor but it does not come on.

Any suggestions? where do I start?

Remove the back cover and put a portable fan near the compressor. Verify the compressor will run after a cool down period.

No, compressor does not come on after cool down. I let it cool off unplugged for several hours last night and tried the fan with it for about an hour this morning. Compressor is warmer than ambient, but not hot like it was when I first checked it.

I hear the click (relay i think?) the compressor will hum for about 10 seconds - but does not come on - and then another click. This repeats in a minute or two.

I left the frig unplugged all day. Compressor is cool to the touch, but will still not turn on.

You can try a new start device, a small black item stuck in the bottom two compressor terminals. Just make a diagram where the wires go to it and order it here, AP4367793

Got the part in Tuesday and installed it. Fridge and Freezer have been working fine since. Thanks for the help Rich!

You are wellcome, and you might want to put a 1000 joule surge protector in the wall outlet to prevent future problems.
