My microwave stopped heating food. All lights, fans and control buttons still work. About 1 second after I turn on the microwave, I hear a strong buzzing noise and it doesn't go away until I turn the micorwave off. I suspect it is a bad magnetron or bad HV transformer. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot so I replace the correct part?

More than likely the diode is bad causing the noise. To check the diode check ohms across it, usually if they are bad you will read near 0 ohms both ways. On that model if the diode is bad the magnetron tube is bad. This page should help GE Spacemaker Microwave Magnetron Tube ReplacementNote that the capacitor can also cause this problem but it is rare. Almost all of these models that I work on for not heating have a bad magnetron tube.

Thanks for the advice. I replaced the magnetron tube and it solved the problem. I followed the instructions on the link you provided. My magnetron tube was still under warranty so GE sent me another one for free.
