I have Kitchen Aid (KHMS155LSS3). I tried to pry off #2 plastic layer and it broke. So I said what the heck and continued on. It still didn't matter --- even after I got #2 out of the way, I didn't have access to the screws that hold in the handle.

So now I am out $40 for the replacement door handle (well I guess I can return that), but my microwave still has a broke handle and the inside is all tore up.

Any more videos or suggestions? Anyone got a working microwave they want to sell me before my wife comes home?

I believe you can use the instructions from the following Service manual.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL KHMS155LSS3 Microwave Hood Combination | AppliancePartsPros.com

Hi,

I ordered the new handle for my 6 year old KHMS155LSS-1 and then read here how hard it is to replace.

I chosed to leave the door on the hinges (Kitchenaide says remove the door) and worked the choke cover off with patience.

Rather than try to get the little tabs free with a screwdriver, I bought a piece of vent pipe and cut a 1 inch wide strip off of it. I then worked this strip under the tabs (starting from the top edge away from the hinges). I used a putty knife to help get the tabs free while pushing the strip under. It was a pain but was done in about 5 minutes. The entire stainless panel then rotated off once the top was free.

I exposed the screws w/o taking it all the way off and replaced the handle. The stainless panel snapped back on and the choke cover went back in OK though I had to really push it in or the latch would not register correctly (light stays on, oven wont run even when door is closed).

I would recommend the Kitchenaide design engineer be fired for creating such a shoddy handle and then making its replacement so difficult...

Hope someone finds this useful... :)

Installation: The instructions which come with the part say "simple installation". While this is far from accurate, if you show a little patience and care you can save $$ on installation charges. The door assembly parts are what I call a "press fit". If you carefully force the issue by gradually working a thin screwdriver along the edge of the assembly, you will be able to separate the inside of the door frame to expose where the handle is actually attached to the outside of the door. The exploded assembly drawing is accurate in terms of the components/pieces involved.

I would also caution you to take care with the position of the glass. Once you remove the rear frame section, the glass may fall out of position. The method they used to retain the glass was poor at best. Now that I am aware of this, I would know to watch out for this event! I avoided breaking glass, but the reverse could have easily happened.

The design engineer DID NOT have the average home do it yourselfer in mind on this handle. There are also a number of ways they could have constructed the handle to avoid this flaw.

Good luck!

I have read this thread on how to install the handle. I have unsuccessfully installed my handle, instead I have now cracked the inner frame as a result of trying to pull the frame off to get to the screws which of course do not exist on this model.

Is there anyone out there that can advise on how to effectively install this handle for this specific model?? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks!!!

Very likely you have to remove the whole door from the microwave prior to take it apart. You can use the Service manual link from the previous page of this thread.

Maybe I am missing something but I went over the manual and my Microwave looks different then the images in the service manual. I have a Whirlpool GH4155XPS0. I took the grill off the top but there isn't a torex screw there for door removal. Am I missing something staring me in the face?

The upper door hinge and the screw are shown as #26 & #18 on the diagram.

So for mine I need to peel away the choke cover to access that screw it looks like. Fun times.
