Here are your parts Replacement parts for MAYTAG MTF2172HRB REF - TOP MOUNT | AppliancePartsPros.comIs the compressor cycling or always on, other than when it is in a defrost cycle. If always on then the most likely culprit is the thermostat. Get a thermometer and check the temperature in the freezer. It should be 0 to 5 degrees F. If too cold turn your temperature control to a warmer setting. Wait at least 24 hours to re-check the temperature. If the freezer is full it may even take longer. If the temperature does not change then I would replace the thermostat. Does the fresh food temperature dial actually open/close the damper (Item 1 in Section 2).
