I have a defrost issue with my GE gsl22jfpbs. I want to test the defrost timer but cannot locate it. Does this model have a defrost timer or an adaptive defrost module? I have tried searching your wessite for my model number but have found no matching threads. Thank you. Ryan

Thank you for your response. This is the service manual for models with digital temp displays. My model has manual temperature control knobs. Otherwise everything looks pretty much the same. However, how do I run diagnostic tests with manual control knobs? Also, there was no tech sheet behind the kick plate.

Sorry do not know how to do this. On some GE's there is a wire that has to be swapped on the Control Board. On some you cannot force a defrost. Hopefully someone will jump in who has experience on this Model
Getting info on many GE's is next to impossible.
I think your unit uses a glass type defrost heater, you may want to start with it as they are a known problem.
Many units originally had a single heater and now require a double heater kit. The single elements were burning out too often. |

Thanks for your replies. I'll try replacing the defrost heater and thermostat, maybe that will do the trick. Any idea what those two items should cost me?

If you do not have a meter to check the heater at least take a look at it, often you can see where it has burned out. Heater Part Details - GE HEATER HARNESS DEF, part number: WR51X10101 Is the new 2 element type Thermostat Part Details - GE THERMOSTAT DEF, part number: WR50X10068You may need a couple wire nuts and some silicone sealant or equivalent to install the thermostat. This is if you have to cut the wires to install it. Use the wire nuts and the seal tthe open ends. Also I like to face the open end down so any water from derfost cannot enter the wire nuts. Give them a call because some of the heater kits include a thermostat. I am not sure about this one. |

I ordered the parts from the GE website. The assembly comes with a t-stat and a temp sensor. Total price with shipping and taxes was approx $80. I'll let you know how it goes. Your help has been much appreciated.

Another quick question... If I take out the "faulty" heater now while I wait a few days for the new one to arrive, will the freezer still run with the heater disconnected?

Yes it should. It will take a few days for the evaporator coils to ice up again and stop the cooling. This of coarse depends on how often you open the doors. |

I just removed the heater. The coils are totally burned out. I am sure now, that it was the problem. I'll give you an update after the parts arrive. Thanks.
How much do you think I saved by not calling a repair man?
