A friend has an ice maker that is not working at all. It is not filling with water. She wants me to replace it, but I'm afraid if I do it still will not fill. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what is really wrong with it. If the ice maker replacement comes with a water valve that could be wrong I guess that may cover the problem, but if not I'm not so sure. Since it's a through the door unit, without tearing the whole thing apart I have no idea what plumbing is in it.

How old is the water filter?

2-3 years. but with it removed the ice maker still does not fill.

The water filter usually does not last more than a year. If the water filter has been removed then you have to install a special bypass plug. Otherwise the water flow would be interrupted.

the water in the door still works, and the filter cover itself says that the water will still flow with the filter removed.

Remove the ice bin and the ice maker and check the water feeding tube into the ice maker for a frost inside.
