The bake element is out on my oven. I am trying to find out if this is something that I can replace myself. I also need to find out the part number and where to get it.

First, make sure to disconnect power to the oven by turning off correct circuit breakers. This is very important. Do not replace the element if the oven is still getting power. It gets easier from here. The bake element is screwed on to the back wall with two screws. In addition, there are two wires connected to the element terminals behind the element mounting bracket. Remove both screws and pull slowly on the element. You should only be able to pull it out about 2 inches or so. Remove the wires from the element - be careful not to lose the wires behind the wall. Connect the wires to the new element and secure the new element with both screws. That's about it. Use the link below to order a new element. - Replacement bake element for your Hotpoint oven. - Breakdown diagram for Model RB747G*J7Hope this helps.

Does it matter which side the red one goes on? We thought we did it the same way it came off but when we turned the breaker on it started heating even thought the dial said it was off.

what happens if the wires come off while pulling out the old element? What do you do then?
