I have a Maytag washing, model LAT9356AAE, and the agitator does not seem to be working properly. It is moving during the agitation cycle but seems like it should be moving faster to get the clothes clean. Is there someway someone can tell me how fast a typical agitator will agitate? I checked the belts and they look good. There's no strange sounds coming from the motor during the agitation cycle. I'm not sure what else to check and don't want to buy a new washer before checking this one out. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Attempt to pull the agitator up (without loosing the screw). If the agitator will lift up then there is a clip broken. If this is the case this page can help How To Repair Maytag Washer AgitatorsWhen this happens water will leak into the transmisson and it is best if you change the oil in the transmission, that page talks about this as well. If the agitator will not lift up your problem is elsewhere. If this is the case let us know if the washer will spin fast.

Jhart, Appliance man could be correct, you may have a problem in the auger assembly of the agitator. You have 2 speeds on the motor, and those are controlled through the cycle selection on the timer dial / control panel. As you requested : You will need to mark the top of the agitator if you wish to count the OPM(strokes). (not the dispenser cup , not the auger). Fast / regular agitation, is approximately 150 OPM(strokes). Slow / Gentle agitation, is approximately 100 OPM(strokes). Let us know what you find, :) :) :)

applianceman - I tried pulling the agitator and it won't move. Guess its not the clips
Joe / APP Team - I marked the agitator and the OPM was only 120 on the regular agitation. Do you think it has something to do with the belts?

J, I could not count that fast, even with a mark, I tested it on the slow speed ! Are there any suspicious noises, You did say you checked the belts and they looked OK, correct ? Were it me, I'd look at two things at this point, Check the drive belt "V" surfaces for excessive glazing(shine) With both belts off the machine, and the front panel off, Check the motor mount slide plate and rollers for lubrication and free movement, and too much side motion on the upper plate assembly. There should be 2 springs on the motor mount slide assembly, you may want to re position 1 of the springs if they are both on the same side of the motor shaft. And lastly, your may want to re adjust the drive belt tension(especially if you need a new belt). Part number: AP4025855
Drive Belt Tension Adjustment Check and clean both the transmission drive pulley and motor pulley. Install both belts, and loosen (1 0r 2 turns)all 3 pump mounting bolts from underneath the base. Hold the motor in position, and squeeze the pump belt in the center, until the inside edges of belt"V" touch, and tighten the pump mount bolts. Good Luck, :) :) :)

Yes, the belts look to be in good shape, there wasn't any suspicious noises, and the pulleys looked fine. Since the agitator was spinning, just not as fast as it should be, I tried adjusting the pump belt and now its agitating like it should. And the more important thing is, my wife if happy that we'll have clean clothes again. Thanks for everyone's advice.
