The agitator on my old Maytag has quit working. During the Agitate cycle, you can hear the motor running, but it doesn't agitate. Once in a while, when you open and close the lid, it will begin agitating, but if you lift the lid again, it will quit and not agitate anymore when you close the lid. Help!

Does it spin at all during the agitate cycle?
Does it spin during the spin cycle?
There are two parts on the agitator...the top should spin just one way. The bottom should agitate back and forth.
If you get no movement at all, it could be the clutch.
