Here's the problem with my GE TFF-22D, side-by-side unit: (1) The top of the freezer does not freeze, while the bottom part does. (2) The top of the refrigerator is cool, not cold, but it gets a bit colder towards the bottom of the refrigerator. My diagnosis: (1) the defrost timer goes through its cycle OK (2) I tried unpluging and repluging to reset the unit, but no change. (3) Alas! the evaporator does not come on at all. Is this my problem? Do I need a new evaporator fan motor or is something else keeping it from coming on? If the problem is solely the fan motor, how do I test it just to be sure? Thanks.

Sounds like a bad compressor or a refrigerant leak. Measure the back wall freezer temperature and post.

You may be wondering why I took so long to respond. Well, (1) it's a refrigerator in the garage and it's hard to get accurate readings and (2) I finally got my temperature gun fixed. So here goes: I'm going to give you a set of readings, first is the freezer in four increments from bottom to top: minus 6, 15, 31, 54 and here is the refrigerator section also from bottom (drawers) to top: 41, 52, 60, 65. The fan in the freezer has not gone on. Thanks.

Thank you. The problem was the evaporator fan motor. A continuity check on the motor showed it was dead. $22 and 10 minutes and I was back in the chill of things. You guys did it!!! :)

Best Wishes,

Len
