I was having a problem with my Frig not defrosting/staying on all of the time, so I went to the shop and bought a defrost timer for it, however, the shop listed two different timers for these Whirlpools, mine of course was twice as expensive as the others. We looked at the specs and they appeared to be almost identical....I opted for the less expensive one. Oops. Seemed like a good idea at the time, up until tonight, about two weeks later and I noticed that it started doing the same thing. Anyway, I am now wondering, should I go back to the shop and buy the more expensive timer, or move on and try replacing the defrosting heater elements?

This is the timer you need, AP2984369 (from this site) or 2183400 locally.

I tried the part that I was supposed to use but still am having the same problems with the freezer not defrosting. Should I now replace the heating elements? Oh, now I've got a new problem. I can't even plug the regrigerator in without it throwing a breaker in the wall outlet...great...what now?

Double check your wiring to the timer 2= Pink 1= Black 4= Orange 3= Red
Here is a wiring diagram which may help. |

Well, the timer will only plug in one way....no wires to adjust. I put the old timer back in and at least it's not tripping the breaker. Ha.... Now what? It's running but I am sure that I'll still have the defrosting issue hanging over my head.

ok, I think I figured out what is causing the breaker to trip. It only seems to happen when the timer kicks into the defrost mode. I've forwared it past the defrost position, the refrigerator comes on and all is good....well except that it still won't defrost.

You need to test the defrost thermostat for continuity, it has to be cold during this test.

Sounds like you have a dead short in the defrost wiring. Open it up and check that a wire or perhaps the element itself is not shorting out. Maybe with the old timer, it blew out the timer's contacts instead of the circuit breaker. I would not leave the new timer in until you find out what is causing this, could screw up the new one when it hits the defrost cycle. I must of forgotten to add the link for the wiring diagram in my last post so here it is https://www.servicematters.com/d...0Sheet%20-%202177036.pdf |

I replaced the defrost thermostat, it tested like there was no continuity. Who knows? But anyway, it was running fine for 2 days, then it started shorting out again. This is getting old
The heating element seemed to test fine for continuity.
Not sure how to test for shorts. argggg

Here is your tech sheet https://www.servicematters.com/d...0Sheet%20-%202177036.pdfPull the timer and check from the PinK connection to White It should read 28 to 32 ohms. Then check to machine frame (earth ground). You are looking for a short (0 ohms) so use a low scale on the meter. Unfortunately your short looks like it is intermittent so the odds are high that everything will read OK when you check it (Murphy's Law). Carefully check the wires going to the heater and defrost thermostat for cracks or any signs of arcing. remove them so you can see the whole thing. Give the defrost thermostat a shake, if it rattles replace it. Also check where it attaches to the coil for any arcing spots. Could be that every once in a while it's contacts short to it's case which is grounded to the frame through the coils so it blows the breaker. If the wiring looks good then the defrost thermostat would be at the top of my list. Hopefully your timer contacts are still OK. I agree with you ARGGGG!!! |
