I just took my dryer out of storage, plugged it in, went to start it and it will not stay running. It ran fine before I put it in storage. I am not sure what part I need to order to get it working again. Please help!

I turned the start switch to the right and the dryer came on, but the second I let it go back to the left it turns off. So, the dryer will stay running as long as I'm holding the switch to the right.

On the motor there are two centrifugal switches, they are closed when the motor gets close to operating speed.
One of them connects in the heating coil, It ensures that the heating coil does not come on before there is air flow.
The other does 2 things. It disconnects the motor's start winding as leaving it energized would overheat the motor. It also provides an alternate circuit path to keep the motor running when you release the start button. It is wired in parallel with the start switch.
This is probably your problem.
When you hold the start switch closed, do you get heat? If not it could be that the centrifugal mechanism in the motor is broken or it may be so clogged with lint/dirt that it is not working.
If there is heat then you may have a bad connection to the switch or the switch is toast.
I cannot get wiring diagrams for GE units but the heater centrifugal switch is usually the one with the two red larger diameter wires going to it. |

If I hold the start switch to the right it does stay running and there is heat. Once I let it go, it immediately turns off.

OK, that tells you that the centrifugal mechanism is working and closing the switches.
So either there is a bad connection somewhere or the other centrifugal switch for the motor is toast. |

Someone told me that they think it is the motor itself and needs to be replaced. I don't know much about it, but I would think that it wouldn't run at all if it was the motor...right??? So, I will try to look up the switch and see about purchasing it. Would you be able to find the part number for me so I can order the correct one? Thank you so much for your help.

My dryer has been working beautifully until the end of an air cycle only (w/down pillows). Now the start button won't stay on. I don't seem to have heat either. It sounds like my problem might be the centrifugal mechanism and needs to be replaced. But, to see if it's clogged with lint (or feathers) will I see it, if I open the back? My dryer is not quite 5 yrs. old. Thank you!

Your friend is correct, the switches are not available as a separate item. They are part of a motor assembly. Part number: AP4295548
