When placed in auto dry mode it runs continually. If placed on a certain time it will stop. Could this be a problem with sensor?

Yes. Before you replace it clean the sensor with alcohol, and then give it a try. Also, make sure the vent is clear to the outside. Also, sometimes the one of the wires fall of the sensor. I do not see a sensor in the parts breakdown.
Are you sure that you have a sensor?

Many units do not have a dryness sensor when in an Auto Mode the timer motor gets power through the heating element when it is turned off.
If the heating element does not turn off for some reason (probably grounded) the timer will not advance.
Also it runs through a separate set of timer contacts.
Try the unit in air fluff, does the heater stay off?
Does the timer now advance?

Hopefully the unit has an air fluff auto cycle.

Well Denam there is a case of Tom assuming, and not looking at the picture!! You know what they say about Assume? LOL!!! I did not see a sensor either. It very well could be vent issue, where the thermostat is not getting satisfied, to advance the timer. Never a fun one to diagnose, not being there. Good Job, slapping the service man around Denman!!! LOL!! Tommy Boy!!!!

I checked the vent and it is clear. I can see a sensor on the back of the drum. Seems to be two strips. How do I get at this?

OK your model must be an XSW1
Here is the parts breakdown for that unit.
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL LE7680XSW1 | AppliancePartsPros.com

Just reach in and clean them with damp cloth.
You may have to use isopropyl alcohol.
What is important is to get them clean between the strips.
If there is dirt between them it acts like a conductor and the unit thinks the clothes are wet.
Do not go crazy with the alcohol as it is flammable.

Cleaned with alcohol and water. Still does not stop and timer does not advance. How do I get at the wires to check continuity?

Looking at the parts breakdown you should be able to get at them by taking the back panel off.
