I have replaced the dogs in the agitator, inspected both the spline on the drive shaft and in the lower agitator which look good. I have run the washer (dry) with only the drive shaft, with the lower agitator in place, and with the complete agitator and auger in place and all action appears normal. I then filled the washer anr ran it with no load and action appears normal, water splashes as expected, the agitator rotates in a back and forth motion and the auger is free in a clockwise direction and rotates in a counter clockwise direction. NO NOISE WAS OBSERVED DURING THESE TESTS. I added an extra small load and the noise returned. It sounds to me like a gear jumping but I can't verify that at this time. How do I proceed from here? Could this be caused by the clutch assemble or is it in the transmission? Thanks for your help.

DRC,

Does the noise occurr only in the agitate mode ?

Did you notice if the basket has a slow rotation while the agitator is moving in the wash cycle ?

I'd expect the noise to be there, wether there was a load or not, if it was the gear box, I also realize that a load on the shaft could cause a gear to slip, but is not likely, or should be the last resort.

I (personnally) would go to a new agitator, before I'd go into a gearcase replacement.

Part number: AP3038590
Part number: AP3038590

Thanks for the quick reply.
The noise is only when it is agitating. The tub does not move, but I did notice the lower half of the agitator rotates slowly counter clockwise.
It may be possible that the teeth inside the agitator are worn, but by my inspection they appear to be normal with none broken or signs of wear and no residual pieces of the agitator material are present.
Thanks again.

OK Joe, I don't think it is the agitator. How can I validate that it is the agitator? While running dry I can grab the agitator and it does not slip. Is it possiple that the clutch and brake assembly would cause this kind of problem? Also the clothes tend to wrap around the agitator and won't allow the spin to occur occasionly. I am just not convinced that it is in the upper protion but is in the area under the tub. If I remove the cabinet will I be able to make any significant observations? This is quite baffeling since everything seems to be so solid.
I don't want to just keep replacing parts hoping that it solves the problem. I have already done that when I replaced the dogs although they really did need to be replaced. Nothing appears to be real apparent for the cause at this point. Where do I go from here? I am really lost at this point!

Don,

Ok,

You've convinced me too, it's not likely to be an agitator problem.

Your next move would be,

Remove the cabinet, remove the drain pump, remove the motor,

With the motor dismounted from the gearcase, check the three pins or legs of the plastic motor drive coupler, and the rubber sleeve for bent, cracked, damaged, distortion, at both ends(motor and gearcase)

Part number: AP3963893
Part number: AP3963893

If that is damaged, it could give a noise similar to your description, so check it closely, the next move is going to be a gearcase (pretty expensive part).

As long as you've got the cabinet off, you could remove the plastic tub cover, agitator, and spin block nut and remove the tub and check for something in the tub bottom (you can use a pipe wrench to remove and re install the nut).

Good Luck,

Well Joe, I have pulled the cabinet, pump&motor, coupling and all looks good. How do I remove the transmission? Is it just the three bolts or does the drive shaft for the agitator also have to come out at the same time and if so are there any seals that I will have to replace. I did not remove the tub. I can't see how that coule affect the agitator drive shaft.
Thanks for your help so far.

Don,

You've got it under control,

Yes, remove the three bolts holding the transmission to the tub base plate,

Be very careful, and take your time, and try not to disturb the clutch assembly, or spin tube, too much.

It's best that you lay the washer on it's back, it'll be a lot easier.

Most people no longer rebuild or repair the transmission, it's sold as a complete unit.

But,you decide which way you want to go.

Good Luck,

 Hi Joe, Its me again. I tore apart the transmission and replaced the agitator shaft. However I have reassembled the gearcase and I have one part ( A retaining clip ) that I am not sure where it came from since it has been awhile since I removed it. It is not one of thr clips at each end if the shaft where the agitator spring is located (PN 90369) and it is not the retaining ring (PN 95082). This clip has an odd shape kind of like a horse shoe but with two wide flanges. It definately fits into a groove or twin slots. I am going to try to attach a jpeg image. Let me know if you get it or what I need to do to get you one and I will. Thanks for the help.

Don,

Got your jpeg image,

That clip appears to be part of the "spin tube" basket drive assembly.

It is part #3 in the parts diagram
Part number: AP4260762
Part number: AP4260762

and is located below the bottom "spider" plate of the tube assembly, above the guard ring and clutch pads.

I hope this helps.
