Washer will not go into spin cycle reliably- replaced lid switch (old switch was fine also)- can get the washer to fast spin only after pressing and depressing the lid switch- on and off-

The machines have a neutral gear which allows them to drain without the basket spinning. The timer pauses after the drain, which causes the transmission to go into spin.

In your case the timer is not doing the pause, but you are effecting the same thing by opening the lid to stop the motor.

Replace the timer and you should be fine.
