i HAVE TRIED SEVERAL THINGS BUT I CAN'T GET THE WATER TO DRAIN OUT BEFORE DURING OR AFTER CYCLE. I have checked the airgap. the pump is to come on as you turn the machine on. it does make the sound like it is on, but nothing comes out. I ran it through a cycle with vinegar and cleaned out the lower drain screen. what is my next step. I have little money so calling repair man is out of the question. Has not been working for a few months. my wife is tired of eating on paperplates, HA! But true.

Please help if you can. Thanks TBAX

Here is the parts breakdown.
Replacement parts for General Electric GSD5560G03SS Dishwasher | AppliancePartsPros.com

I would disconnect the drain hose from the hose plumbing at the air gap and place the hose in a pail. Then try a drain cycle. Be sure to hold the hose firmly in the pail and put a towel over it to stop it from splashing all over. This will eliminate the house plumbing as a possible cause.

When it is trying to drain check that the drain pump is running (vibrating).
Watch that you do not touch the electrical connections.

Remove the sump cover and check that the sump is clean. You may be able to feel if there is something jammed in the pump impeller. Be careful as there is often glass in the sump. Take note how the inside insert goes in, put it back wrong and the chopper will eat it.

If the above is OK remove the drain pump (Item 325 in Section 3) and check it. Try to get most of the water out of the sump first. A siphon hose, sponge or turkey baster should help here.

If the unit drains some water but not all it could be the piston and nut (Item 564 in Section 2). It is under the rear screened cover and unscrews. If this valve does not seal properly some of the water goes back into the tub instead of out the drain.

Should I remove the entire dishwasher to work on it? I did unhook the drain hose and blew in it to see if it was clear. I did clear some glass out of the sump and some old soap and gunk. Still wouldn't drain. Should I pull the unit out?

That probably would be the easiest.
Does sound like the pump is toast.

Don't really know why it started working ... we took it out. Took it into the garage, got all the water out of it. Last night I opened it and put two cups of water and two cups of bleach in it to clean it out. It had gotten some musty smell and some mildew, not bad just had sat with water in it. When i disconnected the drain hose there was some water in it. When i let it down on the ground water kept draining out. I figured because of that the drain hose was clear. We did check the filter in the back and the piston to be sure that was free but didn't think it was plugged. I found a fold out page with diagnostic instructions on it. It helped alot. I can send that via fax or email to you if you want it. We took all the drain hoses lose and checked them. ran it through the diagnostics and everything worked. Put it back in and it is running through a cycle now. The drain pump ran, we tested by putting a bucket of hot water in the tub and ran the drain pump. all appears to be working. send me a fax number or email if you need the instruction for diagnostics.
