During the spin cycle, the belt is slipping and the tub won't spin and I can smell the belt burning as the belt slips. I disconnected everything and turned the unit over. There is a drive belt and a pump belt attached to the motor pulley. There is a lot of play in both belts mainly due to the motor pulley moving laterally. Is that normal? Is there supposed to be that play in the motor? Will a couple of new belts fix me up or do I need to somehow worry about that play? Thanks for whatever help y'all can provide.

The motor movement is quite normal and necessary. That's Maytag's way of eliminating the clutch. Definitely replace both belts (they normally com in a package together) Part number: AP4011179

You might have something stuck in the tub. Before replacing belts, I would turn the tranny pulley in the spin direction. If very hard to turn, you probably have something in there. Just hinge back the top and remove the tub top and look.
