I just received a reply from Gene, a APP volunteer, who emphasized to me that I should not just change out the tray - it is a more complicated repair than it looks in getting the icemaker to work after.

For mine, the icetray was $70 - for $120 I replaced the entire icemaker: it was an easy repair (old one slides out after removing 1 screw) and now I have a new icemaker motor/setup as well. That was what I did even before Gene told me. The $50 extra was worth it in my time (and possible ongoing problems).

This is just what we needed to know. Fantastic, thanks again so much. Our refrigerator is still under warranty, so we'll ask them to replace the icemaker. (We hope the replacement doesn't have the same problem!). You really have been so helpful and we very much appreciate it.
