I have a top loading whirlpool LSQ8543J that does not spin or agitate. The drain pump seems to come on, the timer triggers the water valves. No spinning or agitation. How to trouble shoot? No digital anything on this machine. Thanks for any clues

Check the motor coupler. If it is shot, the washer will still drain but will not agitate or spin.

Whirlpool 285753A Whirlpool Direct Drive Washer Motor Coupling - AppliancePartsPros.com

Thanks when I tilted the washer back and looked at the coupling it looks intact/not broken. I can turn it one direction without it stopping but it will stop in the other direction after a few turns. I don't hear the motor running but I hear a humming sound when it gets the cycle that would spin the tub. Appreciate your help

Pull the pump off the back of the motor and see if motor will run in spin mode. If it just hums, pull motor and set it on the floor and try it. Place your foot on the motor before starting washer as it will jump if it starts.

removed pump. Took hoses off pump and checked for jams. Pump turns freely. took motor off. Hooked up lid switch. With foot on motor turned timer to spin on cycle timer and depressed lid switch. Motor turned.
twisted shaft on transfer case with pliers turned easier ccw (turn agitator) CW turned and it was tough to turn. Hooked up motor and it turns the tub. Was something jammed or about to go?

Thanks

Hard to say what happened there. Check the motor plug and receptacle for burnt/corroded pins and check the pins on the motor thermal overload connections. Check the connections on the capacitor as well. Maybe moving the motor and wiring harness around did something.

The spin cycle quit again. I first ran a small load with no clothes and the tub and agitator were working. Next ran a small load with clothes and the spin and agitation quit again. I initially noticed that the plug receptical (three way adapter plug, yes I know that was dumb) looked heated up slightly melted....but the washer has been running for years like that without a problem.
I will check all the connections attaching to the capacitor and any other connections. Not sure if something is jamming up and making it too hard to turn the tub? or electrical.....THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

You could check the voltage at the motor plug while in spin mode, should be about 120vac across the blue and white/black wires.

Thanks...so pull off the cover or just tilt the washer back, set it on spin mode and check the voltage across the blue and white/black/wires? I am hoping I can find access to the wires without pulling the cover off again.

The funny is that it did run for a while spin/agitate after taking it apart.

Thanks for your help
