It would be a whole lot easier with the cabinet off. Just jump out the lid switch and leave it off til you get the problem resolved.

Eric I double checked the plastic coupler pieces, no apparent wear with very little slop/movement on either shaft. as far as I can tell no rounding of the plastic piece inside diameter. doubled checked the pump, no problem. I took the tub out and didn't find anything but lint. The coupler shaft is very hard to turn clockwise (moves the tub direction) even with the tub out. is that sounding like the gear case/transmission? it seems like it shouldn't turn that hard with no tub. It only worked for a short while after I put it together the last time. If I replace the gearcase do you think that will fix it or will I need to buy more parts? Trying to avoid the shot gun method of replacing parts to figure out the problem. will check the wires again. The resistance in turning the shaft without the tub doesn't seem right. Thanks for any ideas as to next direction.

Thanks for any ideas as to next direction. I put it back together and ran a small load with low spin and high spin. It worked for that cycle. I am stumped. I did spin the coupling when it was disassembled and maybe that freed up the gear case enough to run?

It may be a faulty gearcase since both agitation and spin are affected. When it fails, if your sure the motor is running, works in both directions and the coupler is good and neither agitate or spin works, it must be the gearcase.

Eric Thanks, so the gear case can ocassionally lock up as it reaches the end of its life? The clutch should have nothing to do with this? If the clutch was failing the motor would be spinning right?

Well, the clutch has nothing to do with agitation. If you have good mechanical skills, you can tear the gearcase down and try to find the problem. Most parts in there are available. The gearcase operation is relatively simple once you figure out how it all works. There are video's and diagrams available online.
