Hey guys, I am working on a frigidaire stainless side by side fridge/freezer. We have had it in storage about a year, so I brought it home and it wont freeze in the freezer side, which also makes the fridge side warm too. So here is what i have done. I dint see any oil where it was stored on the ground. I pulled the run capacitor, and it has 15 uf, i tested the starter, it has 120 volts both upper poles, i checked for a short on the compressor it was good on all three posts, also I checked resistance, and it checked ok. I can hear the compressor start and all the fans are running, but no cold. SO today I took off the back panel inside the freezer and looked around. I unplugged the wires to the defrost heater and I have 93 volts AC, I would think I would have 0, so now I am thinking that I have a heater that is staying on all the time and not letting it freeze, what voltage should I have on these two wires when not in defrost cycle? Also on this model i cant seem to find a defrost timer, is it controlled by the thermostat, or have I missed something. I am starting to see some frost on the coils inside the of the freezer on the coil, not sure if it was doing that before or not, but I have some hope. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Bruce!!

Can you feel the compressor vibrating?

The voltage should be 0 ohms. It could be just ghost voltage but 93 does seem very high for it to be this. If it was real voltage then the defrost element should have been warm/hot.
Leave it unplugged and see if the unit cools

The defrost and the unit's temperatures are controlled by the board, see the tech sheet.

Let it run for a while. if the coils frost over fairly evenly then your compressor/sealed system is probably OK. If you only get frost on one area usually where the freon enters the evaporator coils then you are probably low on freon.

Ok so it sounds like i probably have low freon charge, the first 6 iinches of the coil is getting frost the rest isnt. What is the best way to find a leak, I saw on ******** some freon sniffers that are supposed to find freon leaks, do they work? or is there a better way to find a leak. Any help is greatly appreciated, bruce
