My GE electric dryer will only hum when you try to start it. If you give the drum a push it will start right up and run. Do I need a new motor? (motor is $200, 1/2 cost of the dryer) or can the cetrifugal starter be replaced? I have had other issues with this dryer, mainly poor craftsmanship.
Thanks

Odds are that you will need a new motor. Try rotating the drum in the correct direction to see if there is too much drag on it. You may want to try this on a couple other units to get a feel for it.
If the drag is normal then the motor needs replacing.

No, the centrifugal switch cannot be replaced separately, it is part of the motor assembly.

At over $200.00 I would not replace the motor especially since you may also need other parts that have worn re: rear bearing, belt, front glides.
