The last 2 times I used the oven, I turned the oven to bake on 350 degrees and the oven took about 5 minutes for the burner to go on. Both times there was a slight but definite smell of gas. After the burner went on, the oven worked fine and the gas odor disappeared. I am prepared to call a stove repairman, but am wondering if I can do anything to fix it.

Most likely the problem with your oven is a bad bake igniter (#18 on the gas control break down diagram). Replacing the igniter should solve the problem. If you know how to use a simple hand tools - you can easy do it yourself. - The part number for the bake igniter AP2150412 - Here are the break down diagrams for the Tappan range Model 30-3982-00-01Gene.
