I am working on this air conditioner, the compressor continues to run
with the unit turned off. What could be the problem?

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for LWHD2500ER models | AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is a service manual
LG LWHD2500ER 25,000 BTU Window Room Air Conditioner Service Manual - ApplianceDigest.com
You have to join the site to download the manual but it is free and this is a very good site for manuals and other info for the appliance repair DIYer.

Sounds like the compressor relay's contacts are welded together.

 This unit does not use a relay it is a Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) compressor.

The wiring diagram does show a relay on the circuit board which I thought controlled the compressor.

Page 20 in the manual near the compressor on the AC PCB Assembly, it is marked RY-COMP.

If I am out to lunch on this one could you explain what the function of this relay is
Thanks in advance

Yes upon further examination it is a switch (solid state) . This switch is between L2 and the overload. What purpose it serves is another question as it is not between any compressor windings.
